woman's backpack, in this case, a police pursuit. officers just wrapped up their investigation. >> reporter: just within the last ten minutes, officers wrapped things up here at this intersection. you can still see quite a bit of glass there on the intersection, as wells a that crime scene investigation, right at that intersection at that bus stop. that is where a missouri da minivan was stuck. behind the wheel, an innocent bistander, who just happened to cross paths with a fleeing fleet. a bold street robbery of a woman walking at pacific heist around 5:00 this evening. >> the suspect approached her and grabbed her backpack, which included an ipad. >> reporter: officers in the area received a description and

license plate of the vehicle. >> all of a sudden, a car came through the intersection at a high speed, and another car behind with a police car after him. >> reporter: it was here where the chase ended in a frightening crash. the suspect's vehicle slammed into this minivan. >> my son was there literally three hours ago playing in the park. he's 4. so it's really heartbreaking and sad to see this going on in the community. >> reporter: the suv crashed into several parked cars. >> i ran into one of the stores on the block, because i was like, i don't need to see it. i just want to be safe. >> reporter: all three male suspects were arrested. did police overreact in the response to a stolen backpack? a captain at the scene said not

given recent results. >> we've been hit pretty hard by recent street robberies, smart phones, and ipads. hopefully we'll be able to tie these suspects into other crimes. >> reporter: just up the street from here there was a community meeting tonight about the theft of ipads and iphones. the supervisor telling me tonight, this is a reminder that all of us with these devices need to be aware of our surroundings. heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now on the frequency of these crimes. san francisco police tell us, they've taken almost 1200 reports of robberies involving a smart phone so far this year. those reports make up more than half of the 2300 robbery cases reported to sfpd all this year. new video into the ktvu news room tonight. police say they were called into the screen on vermont street near prince street around 6:30 tonight.

they say a young man was dead inside a car. he had been shot multiple times. witnesses say they heard 12 to 15 shots fired. it appears the shooter walked over to that car and opened fire. targeting that man inside. new information tonight about a brazen robbery at a safeway store in san leandro. investigators are interviewing a man who might be linked to that robbery. police detained a possible suspect. they impounded the silver van he was driving. five men pulled off last night's robbery in san leandro. police say at least four of those five men had guns. officers say the men ordered everyone to get onto the floor and then stole money from the cash registers. and he was hilt by a bullet while sleeping in bed. this 11-year-old boy is back home. in 13 minutes, why his family says they are frustrated with police.

turning now to the race for the white house. new polls in three battle ground states suggest a possible turning point. president obama's once narrow lead over mitt romney has now widened considerably. in ohio, the president has moved out to a 10 point lead. ohio is traditional been key to any republican presidential victory. in florida, which is another crucial state for the gop, the president is now up by 9 points. in pennsylvania, the president is ahead by 12 points. the polls were conducted in the past week for the "new york times" and cbs news. what's caused this surge in the polls and why does the president seem to be pulling away? ktvu's ken wayne is live in san francisco with some answers to that, and also why this first debate next week is so critical. >> reporter: frank issue number 1 is the economy. many americans believe it's heading in the right direction.

mitt romney has been relentlessly pounding president obama about the economy. he did it again today in ohio. >> i don't believe we can afford four more years like the past four years. >> maybe they haven't been happy the last four years. maybe they were disappointed with obama, but generally, they think we're on the right path. >> reporter: we found people at union square willing to discuss the merits of both candidates. >> he's been president for four years, and we haven't seen the turn around that he had promised. i'm not sure why the numbers aren't correlating to his performance? >> reporter: some republicans aren't buying the latest poll results. >> i don't think the election is over by any way shape or form. i think it's going to go down to the wire. >> reporter: next week's debate may be critical for romney. >> you have to get people at

your side. the debate is key. >> reporter: corey cook says the bar is actually low for romney. >> he really needs to have a positive debate performance, where he appears presidential. that basic standard, does this guy look like he can be president is one he hasn't met over the last two or three weeks. >> reporter: there are three scheduled debates, the first one at the university of denver one week from tonight. ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. a caltrain accident sent one man to the hospital, and snarled the evening commute in san bruno. a northbound train clipped a vehicle about 6:00 tonight. the driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. trains were delayed about 30 minutes. a caltrain spokesperson could not tell us if the crossing arms were working properly, or how the car ended up on the tracks. new details about a teenage driver from concord who struck and killed a father and

daughter on their bikes. we learned that the teen was going 72 miles per hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone at the time of the crash. tonight, the 17-year-old is behind bars, after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter. the suv ran onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting another car. instead, he struck and killed 41-year-old solaiman nuri, and his 9-year-old daughter hadessa. the widow and mother of the victims spoke of her pain. >> everybody has a wife, everybody has a sister, everybody has a brother. put yourself in my shoes when you tell me how you would feel. >> the judge called him a danger to society. sentencing is set for october 22. he could be held in juvenile

detention until he is 21 years old. the university of california revealed it is going to pay out $1 million in claims stemming from that pepper spray incident. today, officials announced that the uc system is paying damages of $30,000 each. in addition they will pay $50,000 to the plaintiff attorneys and set aside $100,000 for any other climbs. the agreement must first be approved in federal court. late word of a deal to settle the impasse between the nfl and referees. see when the real refs will take the field again. mahmoud ahmadinejad took to the podium calling for a new world order.

she was just 13 years old when a teacher started molesting her at school. [ female announcer ] this is the story of sam,

who made an unexpected arrival. [ woman ] he was 4 months early, weighing 1 pound, 12 ounces. [ female announcer ] fortunately, sam was born at sutter health's alta bates summit medical center. [ woman ] the staff was remarkable. they made me feel safe, trusting, cared for. [ giggles ] they saved his life. i owe all of them my son. [ female announcer ] alta bates summit medical center and sutter health -- our story is you. were a young woman has filed a civil lawsuit against the muraga school district.

amber lee is live now and tells us how the young woman hope this is lawsuit will give a voice to other victims of abuse. >> reporter: the 30-year-old sex abuse surviver filed this lawsuit against the moraga school district. she tells us, two of her former teachers at this middle school sexually abused her. kristin says she suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, and copes with the help of her service dog murphy. she tells us, she was only 13 years old, when the sex abuse started, and lasted for about five years. >> that one is pretty hard to look at. that's before the abuse started. >> reporter: she says she filed a lawsuit, because school officials failed to protect her, when they were aware at least one of the teachers had previous complaints against him by another student. >> if i could get a time machine and go back and start over before all of this, that's what i would want from the

school district. >> reporter: the district would not comment on the lawsuit. she says they failed to hold the two teachers accountable, and enabled them to steal her childhood. >> they can't give that to me, so now i find the need to hold them responsible. >> reporter: she says she suppressed the memories until she started experiencing flashbacks and nightmares about her ordeal two years ago, and reported the abuse to police. >> all of a sudden, all the rape and stalking, and all the abuse, that came full into my memory. >> reporter: she says she hopes the lawsuit will enable other survivers to speak up, and report abuse. >> it was the best decision i ever made. that was the only way i could have gotten my life back. >> reporter: she is now married, and is the assistant coach of the cal's women's swim team. one of her abusers killed himself. the other has been convicted of

abusing her and is serving a state sentence. a new fence is going up at a san mateo elementary school, where authorities say a 9-year- old girl was abducted from a restroom. the girls able to get away, and the suspect was caught. but parents are angry about how the school handled the situation. at a safety meeting today, hundreds of concerned parents packed park side elementary school. our cameras were not allowed inside. parents say although the student was snatched about 2:45 in the afternoon on friday, they weren't alerted until hours later. >> this should never happen. they should not even wait to do some action until someone almost gets abducted here. >> the school says it has taken a number of steps to improve safety. 25-year-old bradley marozak faces kidnapping charges. he is currently held without

bay. plants were found inside a small warehouse on charter park drive. authorities say there were as many as 600 plants with a street value of a quarter million dollars. they also found 50 pounds of processed marijuana. according to the contra costa times, officer thomas hothchile was arrested yesterday. he has also been placed on administrative leave. so far, no charges have been filed against him, and no details have been released about the alleged incident. a family from vallejo has filed a claim against the city after a police officer killed one of their dogs. police have said that the officer had no choice but to shoot when the family's two dogs charged him during a visit to their home in may. an 11-year-old labrador mix was killed. the other dog wasn't injured. the officer was there to take a report on identity theft. the family is seeking

unspecified damages. the nfl referees union has reached a tentative contract agreement and the regular refs are expected back on the field for tomorrow night's game. the sides concluded two days of talks just about an hour ago, ending that lockout that began in june. the details have not been released, and must still be raffed by the union. a controversial call during monday night's game turned up the pressure for the agreement. we'll have more on this tentative deal coming up later in sports. an 11-year-old boy is out of the hospital tonight, and recovering at home after being shot while he was sound asleep in his bed. it happened in oakland. paul chambers was there, and tells us the one thing the little boy no longer wanted to do inside his house. >> reporter: amazingly, luis hernandez was all smiles, even though he has a bullet lodged in his back. we were there every step of the

way as his father helped him back into his home. >> i'm happy, but i don't want to sleep in the same room, because i'm scared like it's going to happen again. >> reporter: that fear is shared by his family. >> i don't want my kids here no more. >> reporter: it was 1:00 last thursday morning that a shooter, or shooters fired at least 16 bullets into luis's home. >> i want to thank the teachers and the principal who came to visit me and gave my presents. >> reporter: his family also wanted to thank oakland mayor jean quan who visited him in the hospital. >> i haven't spoke to the police. they didn't even went to the hospital and talk to me or nothing. >> reporter: oakland police chief howard jordan did release this statement. we've had unfortunate tragic experiences involving children and gun violence. these crimes affect me more

continuing coverage of the junta virus scare. a whole new round of testing got underway today. >> yosemite park workers have been ordered not to talk about it publicly, but today, california health officials tested 100 employees on a voluntary basis for the junta virus. there have been nine confirmed cases. today workers filled out a questionnaire, and gave blood. >> the blood test will be looking at infection, any past infection, and the questionnaire shows their work habits, their living habits.

>> reporter: today's testing is a pilot program. >> we know that when people get sick from junta virus and show symptoms, the mortality rate is very high. many get sick and die. it would really be important to know for any health official to understand is that just a small portion of the total number? >> reporter: some visitors were surprised the state waited so long. >> you would think since they're here all the time they would have maybe had more cases. >> reporter: while park employees wait to find out more about today's results, and the testing coming up, park visitors will also become very familiar with junta virus. at yosemite, robert honda, ktvu, channel 2 news. starting monday, sales taxes are going up in parts of the bay area in contra costa

county, people in hercules and san pablo will be paying more. in each case, the increase is one half of one percent. landlords can no longer force renters to declaw their pets in california. governor jerry brown has signed a bill that make it is illegal for landlords to reject tenants. today, scoot networks introduced the first network of shared electric scooters. users can sign up, and rent them for $5 an hour, or $10 for the day. a special app on your smart phone plugs into the dash to operate the scooter. right now, the scooters are available at four locations in the south of market area, but

has surrendered. 20-year-old dylan lamali. police say the victim was shot to death after an argument on treat street. investigators say family members convinced lamali to surrender. adrian landers was also arrested in connection with this same case. come march 1, overnight parking of large recreational vehicles on many san francisco streets will be illegal. it was approved in a 7-4 vote. supporters said residents have long complained people were living in many rv's, and making the streets dirty. not determining exactly what streets will be included in the ban. the ban is expected to include streets near the beach, golden gate park, the bay view district and potrero hills. a rally against a san

francisco grocery chain. dozens of people protested the decision to join a federal immigration program called e- verify. they are demanding they stop participating in it or face a boycott. >> we want our community to know, it has always been a place for immigrants. a safe place, an inviting place for immigrants, and will always be that. >> e-verify requires companies employ u.s. citizens or foreign citizens with the proper authorization, and it is checked electronically. governor brown signed legislation today that will change how the performance of a california public school is determined. it requires the department of education to use a mix of factors when determining a

a two hour long standoff ended safely in san jose tonight. it started about 5:45 this evening, when a distraught man walked into a law office with a handgun. the people inside the building on the 1,000 block of taylor street managed to escape, averting a hostage situation. they were able to contact the man using a bull horn and he finally came out around 7:40 tonight without incident. the father of a man accused

of killing 15-year-old sierra lamar was convicted of 17 sex crimes. he sexually molested a female relative starting when she was just 4 years old. he now faces a sentence of life in prison. back in the 80s, he was also convicted of manslaughter. his son is accused of kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar. lamar hasn't been seen since march 16, when she disappeared while on her way to catch a bus to school in morgan hill. a former gay rights activist, and staffer went to court today and pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges. he was convicted on charges of sending and receiving child porn. the search warrant lists sending numerous photographs with someone in australia. he is due back in court november 9.

in news of the world tonight in greece protesters toss molotov cocktails at riot police who fire back with tear gas. the greek government has agree today $15 billion in spending cuts, demanded by natural creditors. in syria, two suicide bombs exploded just ten minutes apart outside army headquarters in damascus. at least five people were killed, including an iranian tv reporter. security camera footage showed the first bombing, where a van slowed down, and then exploded. that also may have been a diversion to allow the second bomber to get closer. in uruguay, lawmakers in the chamber of deputies have voted to legalize abortion with a one vote margin. the bill gives women the right

to abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. cuba is the only other latin american country with legalized abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy. the cyclists efforts were celebrated tonight in fremont. the 6,000-mile journey began in anchorage alaska. the cyclists are on their way to colombia, south carolina. >> compare today what these breast cancer survivers go through in chemotherapy and radiation, what we're doing is nothing. >> the riders say they wanted to challenge themselves while supporting a charity. the mother of one rider was

got in to film, talking to people at the hospital, both patients and staff. >> reporter: as this film shows nationwide, it shows a slice of highland hospital on the big screen and on the frontlines in this healthcare debate. a strong earthquake hit the remote aleutian islands in alaska tonight. the magnitude quake hit the sparsely populated area just after 3:30 p.m. it was felt in the communities of adak. no tsunami warning was issued. an 8.6 quake this april in the indiana ocean. u.s. seismologists say it's long been thought that aftershocks occurred close to the main shock, but that quake back in april did something quite different. >> the aftershock zone extended

essentially across the world. that shuck up the conventional wisdom. >> he said his study found within 24 hours of the indiana ocean quake, there were four 6.0, or greater earthquakes off western north america. it seems that strike flip earthquakes seem to be more prone to transfer their stresses over longer distances. nasa says the hubble space telescope has captured the farthest ever view of the universe. thousands of galaxies that are billions of light years away. hubble pointed cameras at just one small area of space. the fog is back along the coast. it's pretty dense along highway 1. it's having a tough time getting inland. fog right along the coast, and

we're getting a push here, but that's it. tomorrow morning, i don't expect a lot of fog. this morning, we had good fog coverage all over the place. as we go into the next few days, specifically in the bay area weekend, things heat up. tomorrow it's a little warmer. but friday, saturday, and sunday significant heat. record heat? i don't know about that. but mid-90s in some of the warmer spots. that's going to increase our fire danger. tomorrow, it's similar to what we had today. here's the fog forecast, see how it sits along the coast? that's at 8:00 a.m. when you start off mostly sunny, you end up basically mostly warmer. the we're going to see plenty of upper 80s, and even lower 90s, tomorrow, the fog will be right at the coast, so you will have low visibility. as we head into the weekend, the air starts to sink. this is classic fall weather. the air is going to sink. as it sinks it warms. as it warms it starts to go

offshore. it also dries, and that increases the fire danger. mid-90s in the inland bay valleys. is that crazy hot? no. but some of the warmest weather we've seen for the entire month of september. 91 in clear lake tomorrow. 90 in st. helena. we're ramping up the temperatures each day as we go into saturday and sunday as well. air quality still good with this pattern so far, we'll be watching as we head to the weekend. 86 in morgan hill. 87 in gilroy. then right along the coast, that fog gets pretty dense out there right now. down by princeton, and up north. 75 right now tomorrow in mountain view. the five-day forecast with your weekend in view then, you see the weekend really jacks those numbers up. 98 on sunday. the warmest inland locations, but that's some of the warmest weather we've seen this month.
